When you first sign up for Slack, there’s a good chance you typed in your first and last name, something like “Kerrigan Smith” as the Username to move the process along. But, now after a few weeks of furious chatting, you’ve got the hang of it and would like to change your Slack Username to something less formal, more casual. It’s simple to change from Kerrigan Smith to “KerryS” with a few keystrokes.

If you missed the tutorial on setting Slack up or tweaking existing accounts, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. UMuse has been using Slack forever. We like to think of ourselves as pros with this kind of stuff. Because we’re about simplifying life, we wanted to share just how easy it is to change your name. Spoiler alert: it’s just a few clicks.

How to Change Your Slack Username

When you first sign up for Slack, you can choose how people communicate with you: either by using your full name (Kerrigan Smith) or customized display name (KerryS). We’ll use mine as an example:

During this phase, it’s required that you include your full name in your profile, along with other relevant information like job title and email, etc. (This way your teammates can click on your profile and know who they’re talking to.)

Unless you immediately set up a display name, your full name becomes the stock display name that Slack auto-generates when you sign up. Because Slack is so easy to use, changing your display name can be done in less time than grabbing a coffee in the break room.

Just follow these easy steps:

  •    Click your workspace name on the top left to pull down the menu – you’ll see a photo of yourself and the company’s Slack profile.
  •    Select Profile & account – the window will pull up on the right-hand side of the screen.

  •  Click Edit Profile – Under Display Name, put in whatever you want your teammates to see you as (Display names can have spaces, and you can use random capitalization, and non-English characters)

If you’re looking for a name that’s on the fun side, that’s easy, too. If you’re looking for a name that’s reflective of your interests, consider using one of your favorite movies, or places you wish you had a beach house.

In case you can’t think of a cool name, we suggest thinking about these topics:

  • Superhero names
  • Sci-fi movie titles
  • Harry Potter references
  • Old school computer lingo
  • Lyrics to favorite songs

Whatever you choose, it’s entirely up to you. And if you’re interested in integrating Slack and Email together in one app, check out Umuse, your Universal Inbox for work communication.
